No. 01 - Groan of Energy (DOM_01.M / DMM_01.M) / energy (Track 02)

youtube | khinsider | zophar

The opening theme to the fantasy simulator Dengeki Division.

This song is just a tone setter with nothing going for it, but it’s an opening theme, so I have to throw it here. This game’s soundtrack really doesn't have any thematic cohesion tying them together…

Now that I’m taking my time to listen, the game has a lot of boring songs, but since it was my first time using PMD, they were still very memorable to make (laughs).

No. 12 - Request (DWM_12.M / DMM_08.M) / clear (Track 10)

khinsider | zophar

As anyone can tell on the first listen, this is based on It Bites¹ (laughs). It’s only slightly similar, I promise (after all, this is a video game song. Being too similar would have been a problem.)

Anyways, Lalf² was my only option until that point, so composing was less about having fun and more about “putting down” the sounds forming inside me.

¹ He's talking about Turn Me Loose
² MusicLALF AKA Mucom88, Yuzo Koshiro's driver for the OPN and OPNA soundchip

No. 08 - Secret Passage (DMM_08.M / DMM_07.M) / passage (Track 08)

youtube | khinsider | zophar

The track that plays between stages. It’s meant to be a cooldown for the player’s emotional state, and let’s just say it failed spectacularly (laughs).

No. 02 - Forest (DMM_02.M) / forest (Track 03)

youtube | khinsider | zophar

I like how straightforward this track goes (laughs).

It’s always best not to overthink.

No. 03 - Phenomenal Mirage (DMM_03.M) / mirage (Track 04)

youtube | khinsider | zophar

This one seems to be a vestige from when I used to like corporate rock. I really missed the crunch on how that last part of the solo weeps… It suddenly feels very unique listening to it now (laughs). I guess that’s a matter of taste. Putting it bluntly, the word GM has been losing its meaning lately, so I’m often wondering what do the kids like these days. Although I prefer to do what I personally like (stating the obvious).

No. 05 - Hoax of Wyrm (DMM_05.M / DMM_04.M) / wyrm (Track 05)

youtube | khinsider | zophar

Another It Bites reference…¹ (laughs) Rumors say the guitar riff here was straight up copypasted from them. The weep on the last solo here is also pretty crunchy.

Also, I’m using a PSG rhythm, but in the 2608, the rhythm is automatically generated by the sound source, so don’t worry too much about it.

¹ He's talking about Screaming on the Beaches

No. 06 - Silencer (DMM_06.M / DMM_05.M) / onmitsu (Track 06)

khinsider | zophar

The villains in this scene are ninjas, so I just went with whatever sounded Japanese.

Samurai Shodown got released right after making this, so I remember feeling really bad about how I half-assed this one… (laughs)

No. 07 - Imperial Force (DMM_07.M / DMM_06.M) / empress (Track 07)

youtube | khinsider | zophar

The theme plays inside the castle…
Really gets you thinking “why this?” (laughs).

My brain got kinda lost on the idea that this was a joke game, and that’s what came out of it, I guess. I didn’t have time to look into the debug, so I’m not sure if the tracks are matching with the right parts of the story.

No. 00 - Destinate of Diary (DEM_00.M / DMM_09.M) / diary (Track 10)

khinsider | zophar

The ending: part 1.
A scene were you read a diary with exposition about what happened to your sisters-in-arms… or at least that’s what I remember being told the scene was about… (laughs)

I think I managed to write something that fits the bill. What do you think? I guess this was my last safe and harmless decision here (laughs).

No. 01 - De Vision (DEM_01.M / DMM_10.M) / ending (Track 11)

youtube | khinsider | zophar

The ending: part 2.
It used to be the same song file as part 1, but we decided to split it because it was hard to synchronize the audio with the visuals. But it’s amazing that it took it all the way to the end of the game for someone to finally try to check if the music and the visuals were synchronized… (laughs)

Anyways, that’s all for Dengeki Division.
